What comes out of a typical Chicago garage
Garages collect whatever doesn't have a spot inside. These are the things we load most often:
Yard & outdoor gear
Push mowers and snow blowers (drain the fuel first), old grills with the tank removed, patio sets, hoses and planters.
Tools & workshop clutter
Rusty hand tools, broken power tools, workbenches, metal shelving, scrap lumber and leftover tile.
Furniture & appliances
The couch that got "temporarily" stored, spare fridges and freezers, old washers. See appliance removal.
Sports, kids & holiday
Bikes, treadmills, weight benches, outgrown toys, strollers and boxes of decorations.
What we can't load, and where it goes
- Gasoline & motor oil
- Oil-based paint & solvents
- Pesticides & pool chemicals
- Propane tanks
Hazardous materials can't go on our truck. Chicago residents can take household chemicals, oil-based paint, auto fluids and BBQ propane tanks to the city's Household Chemicals & Computer Recycling Facility. Check its page for current hours and the accepted-items list before you go. Suburban residents can find collection events on the Illinois EPA household hazardous waste page. If you set these items aside before we arrive, we can clear everything else.
How the garage job goes

Snap a couple of wide shots of the garage. We reply with an upfront quote by load size.
Mark the keepers
Point out what stays. We pull only what you've approved, so you don't lose the tools you still use.
Load & sort
The crew loads the truck from the alley or driveway and separates scrap metal and donations.
Sweep out
We sweep the floor so the space is ready for parking, storage or a workshop.

Decide on the car first
If the goal is to park inside again, measure the space you need and tell us. We'll clear that area first.
Sell or give away the good stuff
Working tools and bikes often sell fast online or find a taker on a neighborhood "Buy Nothing" group. Whatever's left, we take.
Watch for rodents
Piles that sit for years attract mice and rats. If you see droppings or nesting, call a pest control professional before reorganizing. You can also report rat activity in the alley through CHI 311.

Garage cleanout questions
What do you haul out of a garage?
Old furniture, broken appliances, lawn mowers with the fuel drained, bikes, exercise equipment, shelving, boxes, holiday decorations, scrap wood and metal, tires and general clutter. If it isn't on our no-go list, send a photo and we'll tell you.
Will you take paint, gasoline or chemicals?
No. Oil-based paint, solvents, gasoline, motor oil, pesticides and propane tanks are household hazardous waste. Chicago residents can drop them off for free at the city's Household Chemicals & Computer Recycling Facility during its posted hours. Latex paint isn't accepted there; let it dry out completely, then throw it away with regular trash.
How much does a garage cleanout cost?
It depends on how much of the truck your items fill. Jobs start at a $129 minimum, and loads are $149, $245, $389, $519 and $659. A packed one-car garage usually lands in the middle tiers. Send photos and we'll confirm the price before we load anything. See pricing.
Do I have to sort everything before you come?
No, but it helps to mark what stays. Tape or a tarp over the keep pile works. We pull out only what you point to, and we can work around a parked car or a workbench.
Can I put my junk in the alley for the city instead?
If your home has City garbage service, you can set large items out next to your cart on your regular collection day, or check with CHI 311 for the current rules. You'll need to move everything to the alley yourself, and buildings with five or more units use private haulers. Construction debris and hazardous materials aren't accepted.
Do usable items get donated?
When they're in good condition, yes. We set aside working tools, building materials and furniture for reuse outlets such as the Habitat for Humanity Chicago ReStore, subject to their acceptance rules. Scrap metal is recycled.
